Nacientes Palmichal Coffee Tour
Departure from San José: 7 a.m. Return: 4 p.m.
Your bilingual guide will pick you up at your hotel in San José to begin this unique trip to the community of Palmichal de Acosta, located near one of the cloud forest reserves closest to
San José. You will pass through the Quitirrisí indigenous territory, where the
Huetares live. Upon arrival at Palmichal, you will visit El Cerco de Don Manuel, a small coffee farm belonging to Don Manuel and Doña Mary. They will show you the process of producing coffee from harvest to roasting. You will grind your own coffee in the traditional way, learn how to make tortillas, and enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee. Don Manuel’s farm is a glimpse into the campesino way of life. Afterwards, you will visit the Beneficio Palmichal, in operation for more than 80 years in the center of the village. It buys and processes the coffee harvested by the growers in the area. We will take a tour of the beneficio, getting to know the different phases of coffee processing. We will also see how earthworms are used to help compost the waste from the Beneficio Palmichal, demonstrating the company’s commitment to the environment. Next, you’ll experience the process of “coffee tasting” with a cup of “Yodito” or “Don Manuel” coffee, the main brands produced by Beneficio Palmichal. Then you’ll enjoy a delicious traditional lunch at Nacientes Palmichal Inn, where you’ll learn about the significant conservation efforts carried out by the association that administers the Inn. To end our trip, we’ll visit a local crafts store that is run by a group of women from the Palmichal community.
Those who want to keep enjoying the charms of Palmichal, overnight at Nacientes Palmichal Rural Inn, and visit the dairy, hike to El Salvaje or just relax in the forest!
