A stay in Keköldi Indigenous Reserve offers a unique glimpse of the Bribri and Cabecar culture. The members of Keköldi Wak ka Köneke Association will introduce you to their customs, typical meals, Bribri mithology and history. You will also learn about their efforts to protect the endangered green iguana and you may be lucky to witness the phenomenal raptor bird migration.

6 quad rooms with shared bathrooms. 24 person’s capacity. This lodge is located in the upper part of Keköldi Indigenous Reserve 650 feet above sea level. It is best for those who want to be in contact with nature and the Bribri culture. Rooms include large balconies with great views of the forest. Solar energy. Dining room.

Keköldi Bribri-Cabecar Escape (2D/1N)
With transportation from San José (public bus)
Day 1:Take the 6:00am public bus from San José to Puerto Viejo and ask the driver to be let off at Hone Creek(in Palí Supermarket). A local guide will be waiting for you to take you to Keköldi Indigenous Reserve. Start the adventure at the beginning of the trail, where your Bribri-cabecar guide will tell you about the Bribri-Cabecar Indigenous Territory and about the research project for the reproduction of the iguana verde (Iguana Iguana). Later, he will take you through secondary tropical forest, where you will observe palm trees, cocoa and fast growing trees such as the Javillo and Jobo. Slowly climb into the mountains while observing trees of great size and precious wood. You may also see howler and white faced monkeys, iguanas, leaf-cutter ants and spiders. After an hour hike, arrive to Centro Científico Keköldi, your Bribri-Cabecar style lodge, where you will enjoy a delicious lunch. In the afternoon, hike 10 minutes to the highest point, where a tower was built particularly for observing the raptor migration. (October to November and February to March). In one day, it is possible to count over 60,000 birds. From this observation point you will see the breathtaking scenery of the Talamanca mountains. Dinner. Overnight at Centro Científico Keköldi.
Day 2: Breakfast at Centro Científico Keköldi. Free time. Lunch and departure to your next destination.

Keköldi Iro Soum Full Day Tour
Without transportation
This one day tour allows you to observe the great biodiversity of the Talamanca Mountains and the bribri-cabecar culture. At the beginning of the trail, a local guide will tell you about the Bribri Indigenous Territory and about the research project for the reproduction of the iguana verde. Slowly climb into the mountains while observing trees of great size and precious wood such as the Pilon, Almendro de Montana, Níspero and Ceibo usually present in the primary tropical forest. You may also see howler and white faced monkeys, iguanas, leaf-cutter ants and spiders. The guide will then take you to the highest point, approximately 220 m. above sea level, where a tower was built particularly for observing the raptor migration. This migration takes place twice a year: October-November and from February-March. In one day, it is possible to count over 60,000 birds. From this observation point you will see the breathtaking scenery of the Talamanca mountains, La Amistad International Park in Panama, and a beautiful view of the coastal zone of Puerto Viejo, Puerto Limon and Uvita island. After enjoying a typical native lunch, you will then walk down towards the reserve’s main entrance where you will be invited to shop for local handicrafts made by these communities.

Keköldi and the Cacao goddess Half-day tour!
Without transportation
Upon your arrival in Keköldi, your local guide will tell you about the Bribri Indigenous Territory, Keköldi and about the research project concerning the reproduction of the iguana verde (Iguana iguana), a community initiative started in 1990.
Then your guide will take you on the Striu trail (Cacao in Bribri) in the tropical forest. He will tell you about the importance of the local species of flora and fauna to the culture of his people today, as well as their importance in the traditions of his ancestors.
He will also tell you some interesting Bribri myths. Bribri culture places a high value on the environment. At the end of the trail, enjoy a snack of seasonal fruits and take time to look at the beautiful handicrafts made in the community.
